WASH (Water Sanitation Hygiene) Awareness Program
“Treat me well and keep me clean. I will not tell to anyone what I have seen.” – Anonymous
Comfort room is a room or small building containing one or more toilets which is available for use by the general public or by costumers or employers of a certain business most especially for students.
Sanitation in comfort rooms of public high school is something that many students can smell first before they can even be seen. Poor maintenance has become so common, from the perpetually wet floors, dim lighting, broken cubicle doors, minimal ventilation and malfunctioning toilets that ceases to bother them. The stench pierces through the nose so strongly that it physically stops you in your tracks. Those who complain can’t clearly be heard anymore because poor sanitary conditions are becoming less of a concern. The recurring challenges that public high schools face include limited man power who can cover sanitation, and the lack of infrastructure to accommodate the number of students who will be using comfort rooms. To circumvent this limitation, hygiene and health efforts are instead directed to prevention. Schools also cope by reverting to influence student’s behavior.
The problems that ill-kept and unsanitary restrooms create are many. First, 5 out of 10 students tell their teachers that it is useless to clean the comfort room for the cleanliness is not being maintained by students, which can be very demoralizing. The image of entire school can also be affected by the conditions of its restrooms: clean well-maintained restrooms indicate a healthy learning environment; dirty restrooms often suggest danger, lack of discipline and adult supervision, and an otherwise unhealthy learning environment while the other 5 out of 10 students said that girl’s comfort room is really a mess. Irregular cleaning was being exercised, scattered napkins on the floor, irregular and not enough water supply and ashes of cigarettes were also scattered at the door of female’s comfort room. Students also are not well disciplined enough to flush their dirt on the toilets in which it could really make a foul odor. Above all the matters presented students don’t act by themselves first thus they still look for a teacher to present their concern. Students don’t have the initiative on what to do regarding the issue.
One school not to mention, also have a petition regarding the issue of Poor Sanitation and Insufficient Equipment of Comfort rooms. The comfort room is probably one of the most essential place in homes and in any establishments. It is a place used for urination, defecation and hygienic purposes because of this, it is important for comfort room to be fully functional. One school not to mention, toilet facilities are in bad condition, some comfort room stalls have broken locks and do not have doors at all. Almost all of the toilets need to be repaired as they are always clogged to the drain. A lot of comfort rooms also have no access to tap water and this contributes to poor sanitation of the said school.
Hopefully, on the first week of October until the end of the week of November this year. The program will on process in spreading an awareness. Students will become well disciplined, sanitary waste are well keep in a trash can students will directly act by themselves if they see something wrong or problem in the comfort room. Thus proper care sanitation will be 100% implemented if the property custodians will help us on spreading awareness and also a guidance of help by Mr. Ryan Nasibog, Adviser of SWR (Service Without Recognition) as they will also have a room to room orientation regarding proper care sanitation
WASH Awareness program or Water Sanitation and Hygiene Awareness Program is a cognizant design action plan on the problem about the comfort rooms in Sibonga National High School. This will help students become more aware and will lead them to take and action regarding the issue. This will also help the students to realize about proper care sanitation. Realization will further develop into self –discipline in which it could greatly alter the bad image of comfort room sanitation in the said school. Through the WASH Awareness Program, issues on the comfort room will be address and be given an action. Through the help of the everyone in Sibonga National High School, assurance of the actions will be implemented. Thus, this paper aims to improve toilet facilities of Sibonga National High School. We hope that our principal, Ms. Imelda V. Canoy, would support of the said program. We also hope that teaches and fellow students will help in maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the comfort rooms.
One of the property custodians, Mrs. Ana Loraine H. Gealon supports the proposed WASH Awareness Program. One of her perception regarding the issue is that “The problem is not the problem itself but the problem is on the students who often used the comfort room, especially those who lack of self- discipline.” She assures to us that she will give her 100% support in spreading awareness about the matter.
Decent safe and secure facilities are essential to successful educational programs. Creating a safe school environment is necessary in order for teachers to teach effectively and for students to be receptive to learning. While typical thinking regarding “safe school” environment often involves a school that is free of weapons, and other factors regarding the physical condition and appearance of school facilities, such as noise levels and cleanliness are important to consider as well.
